About this Library

So what is there to discover?

In 1885, a Mechanic’s Institute was established in Walkerton. To be a member, the head of the household had to purchase a membership. The Mechanic’s Institute was housed in various locations until it was moved to the Victoria Jubilee Hall in 1898.

In the early 1900’s, the town began discussions with the Carnegie Corporation to obtain a grant for a library building, but it wasn’t until 1912 that discussions turned serious.

By the spring of 1913, a grant was obtained from the Carnegie Corporation and construction of the new library building began in the winter of 1913. The new Carnegie library was completed in the spring of 1914.

On July of 1967, the Walkerton Public Library became a branch of the Bruce County Public Library system. The branch library continues to operate in the Carnegie library building to this day.

In 1987, an addition was added to the building. In 2012, there was a small renovation with an expanded staff work area. Upgrades were also made to the children’s and junior’s areas of the library.
