Interlibrary Loan Book Club Changes

Starting in January 2019, Bruce County Public Library will no longer interlibrary loan a collection of books for book clubs.

Instead, we will be providing 12 kits of popular titles per year. Each kit will contain 10 copies. We’ve already started ordering kits this year to get ready!

We’ll have a quick link on the catalogue so that book clubs can easily find the kits that are available. You can borrow the kits for 6 weeks.

FAQ

Why are you discontinuing the interlibrary loan of book club titles?

This labor intensive process does not guarantee that we are able to provide up to 10 copies in time for book club meetings. Each copy comes from a different library with differing lending policies. In order to maintain a good working relationship with those libraries, we must abide by those lending policies.

How are you choosing the titles for the book club?

We are working closely with our vendor to choose 12 popular book club titles each year. We plan to have 24 titles to choose from in total.

How long can we keep the book club kits?

Each book club kit will have a 6 week, non-renewable loan period.

What if my book club doesn’t want to read the titles you offer?

Each book club member is welcome to submit their own interlibrary loan for a title. We will process the interlibrary loan when it arrives with the standard 2 week ILL loan period – no renewals. We cannot guarantee the item will arrive in time for the book club meeting.

Our book club used to check out items on a book club card in the branch. Is this how the book club kits will work?

The book club card will be phased out as of January 2019. A book club member can place a hold and checkout a book club kit on their own library card. They are responsible for ensuring that all contents of the kit are returned.

Do you know what titles have been chosen?

We do have the titles we’re expecting for 2018. Here’s the list:

  1. “The Clockmaker’s Daughter” by Kate Morton
  2. “Design Your Next Chapter: How to realize your dreams and reinvent your life” by Debbie Travis
  3. “The Home for Unwanted Girls” by Joanna Goodman
  4. “Kingdom of the Blind: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel” by Louise Penny
  5. “The Man Who Came Uptown” by George P. Pelecanos
  6. “The Marrow Thieves” by Cherie Dimaline
  7. “Nine Perfect Strangers” by Liane Moriarty
