About this Library
So what is there to discover?
Southampton’s first library was a private collection of books James Howe collected when he relocated from England in 1851. Because he loved books so much, Mr. Howe opened up the private collection in his home to share them with the community. In 1896, the library was made a public library and in February 1912, Mr. Howe donated over 5,000 volumes and the building to the Town of Southampton.
A new library building was constructed in memory of H.C .Shields’ late wife, Etta Shields. It opened on October 27, 1956 and is also known as the Etta Shields Memorial Library. Bruce County Library Board took over operations of the Southampton library in 1967.
