About this Library
So what is there to discover?
A public library was first established in 1861 as a Lyceum Club and was primarily for furthering education in the area. The first librarian was Norman Roberston, author of the “History of the County of Bruce,” who had charge of about two hundred volumes. In 1866 a Mechanics Institute replaced the Lyceum Club and Hugh Black became librarian. In 1908, with the assistance of Andrew Carnegie funding, the present structure was erected by Wingham contractors, Mr. Nicholson & Elmore Mahood. In 1943 a union with the Bruce County Co-operative provided a bookmobile service. In 1966 the interior of the building was extensively renovated, and in 1994 a new addition was added to the south and the interior was again remodelled.
